Wimberley StoryFest 2022 was a celebration of story in many forms.
The spoken word was well-represented by a group of talented local poets who captivated a packed house at Middleton’s Brewery. Nathan Brown, Alan Berecka, Jena Kirkpatrick, Lise Liddell, Kim Miller, Rhie Azzam and Sierra Brown showed us the power of one of the most ancient literary arts, distilling a story to its most essential elements while capturing universal human emotion.
A night of singer-songwriter performances at the magnificent and acoustically sublime Chapel Hall at Old Glory Ranch was a night to remember. The evening began with a beer and wine and small bites mingle with the songwriters in the beautiful outdoor pavilion. A showcase of two talented up-and-comers Sierra Brown and Sam Downing kicked off the performances. A song-and-story swap with local favorites Nathan Brown, Chris Carroll and Elliott Rogers continued the magic. Headliners Slaid Cleaves, Adam Carroll and Susan Gibson left the sold-out audience cheering for more: a party for 170 people that felt like a house concert.
Two other charming Wimberley venues: the Burdine Johnson Theater at Emily Ann Gardens and the Opera House in Pioneer Town at 7A Ranch were scenes for a day of traditional storytelling. Our storytellers were local people, our friends and neighbors, who captivated us with a Wimberley ghost story, an inspirational take on our great flood, tales of the Texas Rangers, stories of how the arts came to Wimberley and other accounts of odd and enduring Wimberley characters. The headliner for this day of storytelling was W.F. Strong, a Fulbright scholar and Professor of Communication at the University of Texas - Rio Grande Valley. He hosts the radio podcast ‘Stories From Texas’ which airs biweekly on Texas Standard Radio, and is carried on 32 NPR stations across the state.
Illustrated stories, those with a compelling visual component were presented in the wonderful Wimberley Playhouse. We heard and saw stories of swimming with sharks, inspiring accounts of the work of Mercy Chefs, the talent of Japanese kimono dyeing, and the making of assemblage art. The afternoon ended with a performance of the Wimberley Players first production of the 2022 season: ‘Clue’: a hilarious farce-meets-murder-mystery set in a remote mansion where six mysterious guests assemble for an unusual dinner party with murder and blackmail on the menu.
Wimberley StoryFest 2022 was a rousing success and has laid the groundwork for Wimberley StoryFest 2023.
Stay tuned.
